The level design and gameplay mechanics really make you want to be stealthy, and the game incentivizes it. And what's surprising? The game doesn't suffer from it. It's basically the first popular stealth game I can think of with genuinely good controls (MGS1 comes close, but the fact that it emphasizes the radar so much, has poor item-management despite the game constantly wanting you to switch out items, and has some of the worst controls for a sniper rifle ever in a video game really make it just ok overall imo). Much like how Prince of Persia basically laid the groundwork for Assassin's Creed and Uncharted despite feeling a bit more game-y and less scripted, Splinter Cell basically laid the groundwork for third person action games in general.

The second game even apparently has a jungle train mission, like UC2 (haven't played much of Pandora Tomorrow though, so I can't say). natural and emergent, non-scripted, because the player has to come up with that solution, but at the same time it was very obvious from then on how inspired games like Uncharted are by Splinter Cell. Not only is it multi-faceted (pretty sure you can just turn off the lights and hide behind a desk or something, but there's a ton of options), but the coolest option is that you can shoot out the glass window that's the height of the entire room and just hang off the entire building. The moment it really solidified for me on my first playthrough was the mission where the enemies are about to swarm the office you get intel from, and you have to figure out a way for them not to find you.

I say this as someone who got into the series in 2018, it feels more like a blueprint for modern third person games than Resident Evil 4 even.

I was just thinking about this this morning, how weird it is that the legacy of Splinter Cell as the first modern-controlling third person shooter is not just forgotten, but that I don't think it's ever really been acknowledged. So, as we're building it from the ground up, we're going to update it visually, as well as some of the design elements to match player comfort and expectations, and we are going to keep it linear like the original games, not make it open world. Although we're still in the very earliest stages of development, what we're trying to do is make sure the spirit of the early games remains intact, in all of the ways that gave early Splinter Cell its identity. So, I think it kind of has to be a remake as opposed to a remaster. The gaming public now has an even more refined palate. The original Splinter Cell has a lot that was amazing and revolutionary at the time it came out, 19 years ago.

To me, a remake takes what you’d do in a remaster and goes a little bit further with it. The Splinter Cell remake is still very early in development, so not many details are being revealed yet, but producer Matt West outlined Ubisoft Toronto’s approach to the project…
